If you are looking for a book that gives you true “insider” information on places to go, you’ll likely be disappointed.Fielder left out many of the lesser-known scenic locations and generally only included the better-known places.I’m guessing that he did this because he doesn’t want a flood of people rushing to these more pristine, less-crowded areas — perhaps the book should be called “The Best of Colorado (that Fielder wants you to know about).”

If Fielder did intentionally leave out some of the more pristine places for conservation purposes, it makes one wonder why Fielder wrote this book in the first place.Fielder proudly claims to be one of Colorado’s most ardent conservationists, and it is therefore a little perplexing why Fielder would write a guide book.He undoubtedly knows that more traffic to Colorado’s scenic areas will lead to more desecration of the environment, regardless of how environmentally-conscious the visitors are.I would be interested to know how Fielder explains this apparent paradox.

One other problem with this book is its accuracy (or lack thereof).While other authors of guidebooks tend to spend much of their time writing and preparing guidebooks, Fielder spends most of his time taking photos.He did not appear to have time to check the accuracy of all the info he provided.For instance, in one case he stated that there were no roads leading into a canyon in southern Colorado.And while there may not have been any roads the last time Fielder visited it (10…20 years ago?), there is – for better or for worse – a road there now.This is just one of many errors that are rather inexcusable in a guide book.

One final problem I had with this book is the writing style.Before you purchase this book, keep in mind that Fielder is a photographer, NOT a writer.And, to be quite blunt, this is a very poorly written book.The photos in it are nice, as Fielder is one of Colorado’s better nature photographers.But if you’re looking for a well-written, well-organized, easy-to-follow guide book, I’d recommend that you look elsewhere.You might try the tried-and-trusted “Colorado Guide” or “Best of Colorado.”Or, better yet, just buy a good map and discover Colorado on your own.Just about anywhere you go in Colorado is beautiful, and it’s hard to really call one place “better” than another.

The fact that earlier editions of this book have been in print for several decades is a testiment to its fine quality. It is written for the late elemntary to middle school grade level but is a nice quick reference even for adults. The book tends to whitewash certain controversies and treat presidents in a more favorable light than might a longer, adult oriented book. Still, the book gives the basics of major scandals in the presiencies of Grant, Harding, Nixon, etc. Furthermore, the book gives the reader a basic understanding of who each of our presidents was and what the basic issues were during the presidency of each. Knowing the basics of each of our presidents is important for good citizenship and this book fills the bill nicely. I hope that this book will encourage readers to want to read full legnth biographies of some of the presidents profiled or, at least to delve deeper into their presidencies by reading a more complex, adult level book of this type. I highly recommend this great introduction to our presidents.

People who follow the game of golf extremely closely may not find out much more about Woods than they already know by reading Raising the Bar. However, Rosaforte takes a different approach to his work, which makes it very enjoyable. Rather than spit out strictly facts about Woods, Rosaforte’s book goes in-depth with people, besides himself, who have chronicled Woods’ career by sharing anecdotes with people like Mark Steinberg (Woods’ agent), Butch Harmon (Woods’ coach), Scott Van Pelt (The Golf Channel field reporter and Golf Central anchor), Jeff Rude (Golf Week columnist) and various touring professionals, including Mark O’Meara.

Perhaps my favorite anecdote involved the Golf Channel’s Peter Kessler, a noted golf historian. At the beginning of the book, Kessler talked about what it was like to follow Tiger around Pebble Beach during the 2000 U.S. Open:

“I was just keenly aware of what I was witnessing,” he said. “I missed Bobby Jones in his prime, and I never saw Hogan, but I did see Arnie, Gary, Jack, Lee, Tom, Seve, Greg, Nick and Nick. It was my sense after following him 50 holes in the U.S. Open, that this was the best that anybody had ever played golf, and I got to see it. I felt so lucky and honored, and because I had an appreciation for what it meant historically, I started to cry. His mom hugged me and comforted me like I was two years old and then Joanna started crying because I was crying, then Kultida started crying because Joanna was crying, and then Tiger emerges from the scoring tent. Tiger looks at both of them and looks at me and says, `It’s Peter’s fault, he was crying first,’ as we were sharing my handkerchief. Tiger hugged the girls and hugged me, and laughed at me, and went out to get his U.S. Open trophy.”

The entire book was enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the sport of golf at any level and is mesmerized by the unparalleled success of Woods. For those who haven’t followed Tiger’s career closely, don’t worry; you’ll be at the edge of your seat. Rosaforte makes Raising the Bar an easy and interesting read, by catching the golf-novice up to date. For those avid golf followers who already know about Tiger’s career, Rosaforte’s use of anecdotes will leave you unable to put the book down.

I have been using green (and often red) Michelin guides for almost 50 years. For any area in the world they cover, they are clearly the best guide books available, with some caveats: one must have a good general education, and one must be able to read a very condensed map–skills many young Americans sadly lack. With those skills, however, as usual this new edition of the USA book is superb. Unlike almost all other travel books, Michelin offers clear value judgments, rankings, of sights. I have found over the years that I almost always agree with Michelin opinions. Because I like the series so much, and this book is very good, I give it 5 stars. Sadly, however, I don’t think these books are as good as in past years. They should have more ½ page city maps, and there is no reason in the Green Guides to list hotels and restaurants. I suspect fewer maps and more hotels/restaurants are a sop to modern competitive requirements. For the most part, hotels and restaurants suggested are only the very most expensive–perhaps for those European travelers who have strong Euros to spend! Not much use to ordinary people! Another problem with Michelin Guides is that they are relatively expensive and if one travels widely, the collection of necessary guides (both Green and Red) becomes very large indeed. All that said, as an American I find this and the companion edition (Michelin USA West) wonderful reviews of the entire USA. If one has the time to travel widely in the USA, there is no better place to start vacation planning.

Starting with a top twenty, and then cycling through several categories such as Pioneers, Madmen, Monsters, Technicians, Foreigners and several others (I’m not going to spoil it for you!). All of your favorite bad guys are found in the latest publication in the “Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame” series. Previous Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame books featured compelling stories about Canadian wrestlers, and Tag Teams – both highly recommended.

My personal favorite heel of all-time, The Sheik, did make it to the top twenty but did not place first as I would have prophesized; however the top twenty is a veritable who’s who of wrestling villainy.

Some other Hall of Fame heels you can look forward to reading about are (in no particular order); Randy Savage, George “The Animal” Steel, Gorgeous George, Fred Blassie, Gorilla Monsoon, Eddie Gilbert, Nick Bockwinkel, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect, The Iron Sheik, Jake “the Snake” Roberts, Ted DiBiase, Bad News Allen, JBL, Rick Rude, Bulldog Brower (featured on the cover photo), Johnny Valentine, Terry Funk and that is only the tip of the blood-soaked iceberg. There is a perfect blend of old school and new school incorporated into this book and there are several chapters covering some very obscure wrestlers, who nevertheless are deserving of a mention in this book. All the many heel philosophies are covered in this book, from guys who use fear to manipulate the audience, to the connivers who use their superior intellect to outsmart their opponents, to the guys who pride themselves on being bar-room brawl specialists – you really get a feel for the art of being a wrestling bad guy in, and sometimes out of, the squared circle. It’s a fascinating journey that manages to maintain a positive twist despite the focus on debauchery that occurs within the professional wrestling realm.

The wrestling industry has always been build on the philosophy of good vs. evil – but the truth of the matter is one cannot survive without the other. To quote my old pal, Diamond Dallas Page (who is not featured in this book), that’s not a bad thing, that’s a good thing!
